qt/hospital tank q?S

For starters, i have a 55g tank,
2 damsels
maroon clown
cleaning crew
want to start a QT/Hsopital tank, just in case, but unsure on a few things.
Does it have to be connected to the exsisting system or would a seperate system be better?
can i just steal some live sand from my exsisting? or is glass bottom ok?
what to do for lighting?
Is a HOB filter ok? If so does it matter what kind i get, or can i just grab el cheapo?
Does it ahve to be any certain size? I have 2 "extra" tanks here, one is a 5g one is a 10g (currently fresh w/ 2 fish, but i can convert if its better)

yes. just a cup of sand to cycle. mostly bare.
stock ok
cheap filter ok as long as you get decent turn over for O2
10g ok
