QT Question

I always see people talking about using a QT for there new fish. Why should I do this and what size QT do I need. I have a 55 G tank. What am I looking for when I have a fish in QT? Just let me know the quick rundown of the QT.

a ten gal. tank would work. And the reason for a QT tank is to keep from spreading Ich, or any other disease to your big tank where its harder or impossible to treat it, thats what its for.

I just set up a QT after getting ich in my display tank. Wow I wish I would have set up a QT before hand. You should introduce any new fish to your QT before adding them to your main tank. Leave them in there and monitor them for about 3 weeks. If they look healthy the entire time you can then add them to your main tank. You should strive on keeping the best water quality in this tank as possible to avoid stressing new fish. I also have a 55 gallon tank, and I opted to get a 20 gallon QT. It was only like 25 dollars for the tank, so there was no real price difference. QT tanks are good ideas because you can watch your fish to see if they have ich, or other problems of that nature. They are much easier to treat when already in the QT, as getting fish out of a display tank with LR is a HUGE pain. I think the bigger the QT tank you can set up the better, as some fish need room to swim.

The problem with some people, like myself, is that space is a problem! :yes: I could really only get a 29 gallon tank for my appartment. I don't really have room for a 10 gallon to act as a QT. I could squeeze in, like, a 5! I know All-Glass makes 5.5 tanks. Since I only plan to get leeetle fishes...would that suffice?? :notsure:

I've never QT'd my fish. I think your best bet is to find a good quality LFS that is willing to order fish for you at a reasonable price. My LFS keeps all of their fish in copper tanks and in the past has held onto fish for a week or more for me.
Only in the past when I ordered online from places such as this one did I have problems with ich - and in those instances they were both tangs. (go figure :))
