QT tank

I have never set up a QT before (and just have just been lucky to never need it) I have been out of the hobby for several years. I just set my 150 back up and it is going through the cycle process right now. I want to put together a QT tank this time just in case I have any issues. I have some question on how to set it up. I see everyone says just need a heater and a tank. Doesn't this tank have to cycle as well before you put anything in it? If so, how do you keep the beneficial bacteria alive if it just sits there until it needs to be used?

If your stocking a new tank i would let it run until your done. Once stocked and its only for replacement or an occasional new addition then yea its fine to start up as needed
