qt tank

I need to start a QT tank and would like to know if the setup I have is ok or need work. I have now a 10 gal tank that filters off my 75 gal tanks system. I am thinking of add a 2nd filter to the 10 gal tank and when I add a new fish I will shut off the water flow from the 75 gal tank. Letting the 2nd filter do the work. After the qt time is up I thought I could slowly open up the water flow from the 75 gal tank to slowly get the new fish acclimated to the water conditions.
I have not tryed this, the 10 gal was set up for a clown fish that was getting picked on. I did this because the LFS told me good water conditions are hard to keep in small tanks. My ? is will this work?

I think it sounds like a great idea. Like slyly said though, make sure the water only goes one way, from the mt to qt and never back again.
