what is needed to start a very basic QT? i.e.: subtrate, filters, lighting? how long to you QT you new arrivals for?

No substrate as it will absorb any meds that you put in. All you need is a hang on the back filter, a heater, a powerhead, dim lighting, and some pvc for hiding places. You should quarantine for 21+ days.

Do a search in Fish forum, Mr Tang posted a good article on how to set up a QT, The date was Jan 26 2002. I printed it out but should be there HTH

I just setup a 10g QT, with pvc pipes from lowes. I bought a 10g starter kit with a mini-biowheel and an extra heater. I used water from the main tank and also a carbon bag from the main to to jump start the cycle time. However, I don't think my QT is fully cycled, yet. Just tested the water this morning, Ammonia is ok, but nitrites are high. I'm thinking about doing another water change soon. Fish in the QT seem to be doing ok, though. It's hard to keep the quality up without LS and LR.
