Being just a beginner, I've been very intent on getting my main tank setup and running. Now that I'm getting close to adding livestock I'm thinking about a quarantine tank. My question is, for a starter with a limited budget, how necessary is a qt on a scale of 1 to 10. And, would a 6-10 gal. eclipse tank suffice?

How nessecary from scale from 1 - 10? Umm about 20. Its a must. A 10 gallon would work well. My QT tank is a 20. QTing just keeps you from transfering ick into your main tank if its going to be a reef. There is not much treatements to cure ick in the main tank. Hyposalinity and copper will surley kill corals and inverts off.

LOL know what you mean. You can go to Petsmart and get a 20 gallon ready to go aquarium with everyting for 80 bucks. After fighting ick for over a year I have learned from this site about QTing newly arived fish for a couple of weeks . This method almost can have a good guarantee that you wont transfer ick to the main tank. ICK in the main tank is a pain in the A** to deal with.

walmart also has cheap packages, you dont need expensive lighting or skimmer, just a filter , heater, ambient light and maybe a power head
for shelter and such, you could and should use pvc pipe or something inexpensive and all plastic or glass. no lr or ls no substrate , nothing
oh yea, i may disagree with it being a 20, but it is at least a 14. That is for sure.
