I have new 55g that has been cycling for 4 weeks
How long can I expect the brown alge untill it turns to green...greens good right... my live rock is covered. What what else can I expect to happen durring the "new tank syndrom"
Also I keep reading about having a quarantine tank. How do I set one up and will a 10 g be the right size?
How long should new fish live in it before adding then to the biger tank.
I am new to the site and have been reading through the treads, This site is full of wonderful info. and fun people.
Thanks

In my 55 the diatoms lasted about a month. It is a pain, I know, but it will go away eventually. As far as the qt. A 10 will be ok if you are not planning on getting anything large, a 20 is better. The qt setup should be simple. A heater, a filter, and something for the scared new fish to hide in (a piece of pvc pipe works well). No substrate or other decorations. Generally you leave the fish in qt for 3 weeks. This is a time of observation. Keep checking the fish to see if you see any signs of disease. Don't rush this step. It is alot easier to treat a disease in the qt than it is to tear apart your display to treat. Alot of fish don't show signs of disease right away and may look perfectly fine. By leaving the fish in the qt the full 3 weeks the disease, if present, will have shown itself by then.

Ah thats what its called "diatoms". I am going to the book store tomorrow and pick up some much needed reading material *nods* After reading thru these threads the bigest thing I have learned is not to rush anything... so I think am going to be spending lots of time sitting on my hands in front of my tank *shrugs* saying "good things come to those that wait"
Thanks for the info.it is much appriated

Temple, about 2.5 - 3 hours drive.
I go through Houston every once in a while on my way to Galveston.
I hate driving through all that traffic.

most will suggest to perform hyposalinity on all your fish as soon as you put them in QT.
the bigger the better with QT tank size, but most people have 10 - 30 g.
if you arent doing hypo, then wait 4 weeks at least, i have seen fish break out with ick on the 30th when day , hours before i was about to transfer them
