Quarantine question

Ok i got a quick question.... i have a 75 gallon tank, and i just bought a 10 gallon quarantine tank..... i am kinda confused, do i need to put new fish in the quarantine tank for a while and then into my big tank or is that just for when the ones in the 75 gallon get sick.
