I've got a 29 gal tank I want to use a quarintine tank. Is it ok to have live rock in a QT? Should it have 1 or 2 hardy but peaceful fish in it? Any suggestions appreciated...

Many people use their QT tank as a hospital tank as well. You wont be able to use this tank as a hospital tank if it has LR. Many medications will kill it. Also, if you have fish in your QT or hospital tank then they may get sick whenever new fish brings some illness with them.
I wish I could keep fish in mine also. However, I only have a 10g QT/TX tank and it will get overloaded quickly.

I had the same questions and came to the conclusion that you need to keep a couple fish in it to keep the bio filter going. For bio filter, get one of the hang on tank filters with a bio grate or bio-wheel in it. Put some shells or dead rocks in for hidy places but keep the decorating "minimalistic." (Less to move when you need to catch someone.) If it will also be a hospital tank don't add live rock or sand because you will kill them the first time you have to medicate.
I do water changes, check ammonia, nitrites and nitrates and vacuum the same as with the big tank.

I've heard that you can just keep a raw shrimp or a pea in there to keep it cycled. I had the same question about my Q tank.

I have never kept a quarantine tank up and running just did partial water changes evry couple of days to keep the ammonia down. Seemed easier to me especially if you end up having to treat a fish only to knock out the good bacteria as well.

Jimi,
So do you even bother to keep water in it when nothing is in it? Is like a 10-12 gal tank big enough for a quarintine/hospital tank? What your saying about the water changes makes sense... What about filtration? I was thinking maybe I'd buy one of those small eclipse setups to use as a qt tank.. what do you think??

I have a ten an eclipse would probably work well. No, I dont keep it full of water. I use a aquaclear filter for it with heater and a light.

Thanks for the help! Sounds cool cause then you don't have to have a permanent place for the sucker... you can stash it when not needed... I guess you have to get water in at least a day or two before you place a new fish in eh? is it best to take water out of your main tank if it's in good shape?
