Quarintine Tank

I am running a 55g f/o aquarium and I'm planning on starting a 10g quarintine tank but I have a few questions.
1. When you quarintine a new fish do you automatically medicate it as a preventative measure?
2. How long should you quarantine a new fish?
3. If a sick fish has been in the tank to recover wouldn't the disease spread to any new fish quarantined after that time?
4. Should I keep a few cheap fish in the tank such as damsels to keep the biological filter going?
Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for any help.

1. i wouldnt. some fish are sensitive to medications. so why try to fix something thats not broke. some people keep copper in their qtank, but i wouldnt recommend it. 2. youre supposed to quarantine your fish for between 2 and 3 weeks. 3. the disease that lived on your old fish would die off if there was no fish to support it. also you might not even keep water in your qtank. that would surely kill the bacteria. 4. i wouldnt recommend keeping damsels in there. they are aggressive and will stress your already stressed new fish. i dont think you really need to cycle your Qtank. you can use some water out of your main tank before you put your fish in there. also put a sponge filter in your main tank for a little while to get some bacteria on it then move it to your qtank. then just test your water frequently add ammonia remover and do frequent water changes if needed. hope this post helps a little bit.

Trey, So washing and drying sponge filters is enough to remove copper before using the filter in a tank w/LR/LS?

if a fish had ich wouldnt it show up in those weeks of quarantining. also why would you leave the fish in the tank for the life span of ich? with a fish in the tank wouldnt the lifespan of ich be forever? also doesnt really every fish you buy have the ich parasite on them but it is just under control, so why would you medicate them if they can handle it themselves? im not trying to be a smart @$$ or say you are wrong or anything, just trying to learn a little bit more.
