soft corals like mushrooms, zoos, green star polyps, and leathers will usually be attached to a rock. hard corals like bubbles, frogspawn etc have their own skeleton which is not attached to a rock. these you can just place on the rock that is in your tank, given that you place the coral in a location where all of its needs are met (lighting/flow). they do not move around like anemonies do searching for the right spot.
