Question about DIY Refugium

General question...I'm currently looking to build my own refugium using an old glass tank I have sitting around. I've read that if you have a glass tank you should use glass baffles, and if you're using an acrylic tank you should use acrylic baffles. Is this true? It seems like it would be much easier to get acrylic sheets and make the baffles myself vs. trying to cut glass...thoughts?

I used a glass tank and acrylic baffles and it works great. I used an aquarium safe silicone sealant to attach them.

Loctite Clear Silicone Waterproof Sealant (Aquarium Safe), DAP #00688 Silicone Aquarium Sealant, Aquascape, Marineland, etc. Most 100% silicone is aquarium safe once fully cured, but check the label to be sure...

Thanks for the help everyone. So I was shopping around for components to build and found a 20 gallon (long) tank. Any preference on long vs. high tanks?

Long tanks offer plenty of room to chamber for a skimmer, sand and macros, and return pump(s). Water level doesn't have to be very high to be efficient, and most internal skimmers operate efficiently between 7-10 inches of water. 12-14" of water depth in the skimmer and refugium chamber is plenty. Depending on how tall the long tank is, there should be sufficient space left in the tank to hold all of the water that drains into it after a power cut.

Long is better. Easier access. Mine is a 29 gallon. Same foot print as 20 long but higher like the 20 high. I wanted the extra volume but even with a 36" high stand it is tight above the fudge/sump.
One thing to do, I learned this the hard way, is determine what the foot print of the equipment you plan to put in it is before you build it. My skimmer barely fit. I could have moved everything a couple inches and had a narrower return section with no problem and would have had a bigger selection of skimmers.

+1. Good advice. Know the dimensions of your skimmer and return pumps before assembling the chambers... ;)

How long has your set up been up and running? Silicone won't stick to plastic, any little movement and it will all come apart. I tried everything, and finally had a class cutter make baffles for me to put on my glass tank. It's been some years, have they improved silicone?

It is rock solid. There is no movement what so ever in the baffles. I can't even scrape the silicone off with a razor blade.

this is what I used
http://www.homedepot.com/p/DAP-2-8-oz-Silicone-Aquarium-Sealant-00688/100128841

The instructions say it will work on glass, fiberglass, plastic, wood, leather etc. I can verify the leather part, got a bit on my purse and it is still there. Sticks pretty good to hands as well took a couple days to get it all off.

If I set up the refugium and drop an in sump skimmer with live sand and LR...can I get rid of my HOB carbon filtration (bio wheel)? I was hoping to just put some activated carbon in the sump...would that be ok?

I agree you can. I'd do a more gradual switch. Run both for a couple weeks before your take off the HOB filter. That is the beauty of a sump/refugium.

**************.com has a carbon reactor which you can place inside or outside of your sump. I just ordred the dual carbon/GFO reactor today and only set me back about $150 with the media.

Building a sump has been the best thing I have done this far for my tank! ;)
