Question About Feather Duster

Came home today and noticed my feather dusters crown laying the sand bed right next to its tube. No sign of the worm anywhere. Is it still in the tube? If so how will i know? Should i remove the crown or just leave it?

Mine lost its crown when I got it home from fish store. Grew back in 8 days. I could see movement through the transluscent part of the tube. However, it then proceeded to crawl out of its tube and disappeared - haven't seen it since. I just lifted my live rock up yesterday and no sign of it.

I couldn't tell you for sure what's good to do with the crown. Someone said something about reproduction but I don't know if they knew what they were talking about. But because they said that, I let the crown stay in the tank for like a week to see if it would spawn new dusters, etc. but that could be total BS. Maybe someone with the Marine Invertebrates book could tell us if they wanted to look it up.

well i would say pull out the crown. Thats the worms feeding source. so if he cant feed i would perzume him to be dead. or on his way. and with out the protection of the tube someone might just need a little snack

feather dusters are known to "throw" their crowns. This is a general sign of stress, although they have been known to do it without any stressful factors at all. Most likely your duster just threw his. Remove the crown, and leave him alone. It should respawn it's crown in a few days. Don't remove the duster just yet.
This could be a result of poor water conditions, being picked on, etc. Any of this sound like it's possible?
There's a great thread on feather dusters here: https://www.saltwaterfish.com/vb/show...uster+lighting . Great information!!!

Feather Dusters will lose their crown for many reasons. Take the thrown crown out of your tank....no reproduction can happen just from the crown alone. One thing you can do is lightly hold the tube between your fingers underwater and see if you feel any movement. If still alive, the crown will grow back.
