Question about GFCI

I'm about to order a couple of GFCI's for the new setup. My question is this... can surge protectors or extension cords be plugged into the GFCI? Will the plugs going into the surge protector/extension cord also be protected by the GFCI outlet? I am deciding how many GFCI's I need to buy. Thanks.

Yes. and Yes. Remember though if the GFCI trips, everything on the surge protector strip will go out.

I see. As long as the other plugs are protected from fire then that's all I'm worried about.

A better method is to have many GFI outlets so if one piece of equipment trips it doesnt shut your reef down. Remember that a power surge can also trip a GFCI.

You could use a gfci breaker for spas pools. Lowes and Homedepot. A gfci protects outlets after and that outlet. A gfi only one outlet.
So if you have say 4 outlets after the gfci they are protected.
GFI = ground fault interupt
GFCI = ground fault CIRCUIT interupter
You use one gfci in the begining of the branch circuit it protects all outlets after too in that branch. So circuit breaker, GFCI first outlet, other outlets all protected in that branch circuit.
A gfci does not protect against brown outs.
