Question about "nano"

Okay, I admit that I'm really wet behind the ears when it comes to saltwater setups. I have done tons of research. I have seen alot about Nano setups. Now here is my stupid question. What does Nano mean??? I assume it means a really small tank. However, I have seen people post about good size tanks in this forum. So does Nano have to do completely with the size or is it something else altogether??? I'm confused but I'm trying to learn BEFORE I do a saltwater set up!!!!
