question about pipe organ coral

i was given a pipe organ coral from my LFS, because it was pretty much dead. the skeleton of it is about the diameter of a soft ball, but theres only about 10 stalks still hanging in there. should i cut off the rest of the skeleton, or do you think that i ought to leave it? i've had this piece for about a month and when i got it there was only one or two stalks.

so are you saying that the live part started off as a few stalks, and then it grew more and is still doing well
