Question about purple coral algie

Ok so I know the purple algie is good. It has been growing my tank for about 2 years now. For some reason it is starting to die I noticed that it is turning white. Nothing is eating it. I only have 1 fish right now it is a coral beauty. I do have alot of hermit crabs and a pep. shrimp but I have had these for a very long time.
Any suggestions to why it may be dying and what I can do?

have you changed your lighting recently? Coralline can die off when old bulbs red-shift. You can also bleach coralline if you went from, say, t-5s to 250w MH's.

I have been using less of the birght white light b/c I had a problem with red algie awhile back. Maybe that is what caused it. Will it continue to die or can I stop it?
