Question about tank size/swimming space

serious question
ive seen several debates about fish size and swimming space but none address my question.
i have a 150 fowlr
2 juvenile clowns
4 damsels
1 large hermit with anenomes on its back and an assortment of cleaner hermits etc
i want to add a yellow tang but i was told that i need a minimum of 180 gallon OR 6 feet of lateral swimming space
my question might sound dumb but does the "6 ft lateral space" and water gallon requirements take into account water displacement due to live rock and other things?
for example my 150 is really prolly holding at max 145 gallons due to displacement... let alone it doesnt have 6 ft of lateral swimming space..
is the lateral swimming space supposed to be "un obstructed" swimming room? or does one's tank merely have to be 6 ft in length?
thanks
