Question on Building a Canopy

I am planning on building a canopy, and at a high level, have no problem doing it. The question I have is as follows.
The frame for the Laminate that I am probably going to use has to fit around the outside of the tank. What do you use to support the frame on the tank so it doesn't slide down. You obviously do not want to block any lighting by running it across, and the lip is only about 1/2" on my all glass tank.
Should I just use 1/2 think wood around the frame to hold the canopy up?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks....That is what I figured, and I have to build the Canopy to support the MH lights far enough above the water line.
