Question on refugiums and plants?

I have a small 10 gallon tank setup in a NANO style. I have had isses with overgrowth of alge that I want to fight. I was thinking about maybe seting up a in-tank or hang on refugium to help.
What I was wondering was this: If I were to purchase the plant life that you normally put into a refugium and jsut place it in the main tank and not add a refugium what would happen? Would the plant life still fight against the bad alge and provide benifits or would it jsut die? I need some suggestionss and advice.

it still would grow and flourish, i currently have 2 handfulls for red macro algae (possibly kelp but dont know for sure) and also a little bit of feather calurpa. It will still benfit the tank however it might need frequent trimmings/removings as it has the potential (expecially the calurpa) to overgrow the tank. In my tank i have a lettece nudibranch to helps keep the calurpa under control however i dont think that it eats the red macro which is also good cause it is very slow growing. I only have 2 snails in the tank (1 astrea and 1 cerith) so there is still plenty of algae (the back and side walls are covered! but i scrape the front) for the nudibranch to eat.
