question on refugiums

Hello all, my first post here, have been learning alot over the last couple of days reading on the forums. I recently acquired a 150 gallon tank that was given to me along with 2 rena xp3 filters. I would like to set-up a refugium however the stand doesnt have much space so I cant use a large refugium. I have enough room to set up two smaller refugiums. So would setting up 2 smaller refugiums work as well as one large setup? Would putting a smaller refugium, say one built for a 75 or a hundred gallon be of any real benefit if run with the power filters that came with the tank? Have been debating the protein skimmer too, at first I was just going to buy a hang-on unit but if I can do the refugium I will set it up in the stand.
The tank will be a fish and live rock set-up. Thanks and I look forward to learning more, been alot of changes since my last attempt at a saltwater tank 20 plus years ago.

any sump fuge would be better than no sump/fuge. gives you a place to put your heater and skimmer.
mixes water with air
gives you more overall volume of water
gives you a place to grow macro algae
