Question re lighting and glass lids

A friend has vho over a 90 corner. Her glass lids are turning a little cloudy due to lack of cleaning them and just typical hard water spots. We have tried everything to clean them. My questions are...will this contribute to a hair algae problem? will this cause slowed growth and/or coral deterioration?
If so, we will remove and if not we will leave on.
One other question, the vho is sitting directly on the lids. If we remove the lids and use eggcrate, is this going to cause problems with water, etc. on the bulbs?

have you tried to use vinegar to clean the lids??

Tried vinegar, limeaway, CLR, Kaboom, and Phosphoric Acid. It's not coming off.

I've taken my old lids to the glass shop and had them replace the glass once they've gotten really bad. It's cheaper than buying new ones if the plastic is still good.
