Question to Fluval Users...

Hey, I thought of a perhaps less expensive way for doing a fuge on a (small 55 gal. or less) tank. I'm sure this idea is not original, but I thought I could make a cheap fuge by drilling my main display and put an overflow on it going down to the fuge, and have a Fluval 404 pump water out of the fuge, back up to the main display. My question is: Does a Fluval 404 use a syphon to pull the water into the canister or does it literally pump the water out of the tank regardless of the location and then pump it to where ever the return hose goes?

You have to prime it until you here the water falling down the tube and then plug it in, so I assume it is a syphon. I 'm pretty sure that means it has to be below the water level of the sump. I just use a large power head to return the water from my sump, it doesn't provide much water movement in the display, but it works.
