:notsure: I am considering turning my 35 gallon freshwater tank into a 35 saltwater. Any tips on how to do it. I will be moving the a few fish into my 10 gallon the rest are going to a few of my friends. I just need to know how I need to do it. I fell into love with salt tanks after i started my 10 gallon salt and so did my wife, and son. We want to start a large reef tank in the 35. Anyone who can please help. :happyfish :happyfish

JMO - I found freshwater tending to bore me. once I starated back into SW, I was hooked again with all the need for detail, routine, testing, etc. basically everything but cleaning.

not to mention all the additional colors, livestock, etc you can get for a SW tank.

A 35 gallon tank is not a "large reef". If you have experience with saltwater a 30 gallon tank might be ok. The larger the tank the better because the amount of water will buffer some of the ill effects you may cause.
You will need new substrate, and possibly a new filtration system. If you get a hang on filter get one with a bio wheel or some form of wet/dry filtration to build up bacteria. If it is a reef set-up plan on getting a protein skimmer down the road. I have run 30 gallon reefs without a skimmer for over a year with no issues. 45 to 60 lbs of live rock would be good, as well as a powerful lighting system. I have used power compact hoods on my 30 and 55 gallon tanks with great results. Last thing would be a powerhead or 2 to keep good water flow over the corals, just likethe ocean currents.

It is currently running a bio wheel. Should I replace gravel base with sand or leave it in. What type and size of protein skimmer would be best? What size power head and what type would you reccomend? I also have a half of a sunken ship that I would love to intigrate into the salt tank.
