I ordered some LR for my 55 gallon tank. I hear a lot of people talk about using some sort of egg crate underneath it to stabalize it. What exactly is this? Where can i get it? How do I install it(adhesive or anything?) Is it worth it? Anybody with a picture of what it looks like in a tank?

wow that about the most tedious way to cut egg crate ever. I just set it side ways take a butter knife line it up with the section I want cut and hit the knife with a hammer it cuts through like 8 sections at a whack. then I run the hammers edge along the side to break of any pieces left sticking out Wayyy faster.

Looks simple enough? Do you cut it to cover the entire tank or just where the rock will be? Does it work well?
On a side note? Who took the time to put a video of themselves cutting egg crate and edited it to add music? Too much time on their hands!

reef,
you should make a video of your way

how much of a PIA is it to get it to fit on my tank which has an overflow box and mounting legs for my light?

I can't remember who did that but I like it. Some put it on the entire bottom of their tank others just cut enought for their rocks to sit on. I'm going to place my rock directly on the glass and then fill in the sand but will use egg crate as my top to prevent jumpers.

I think that was from ZMAN's post. pretty funny if its the one im thinking of (didnt click). never heard of that method reefkpr, but i like it. maybe you should make a video for it! LOL.
i have the eggcrate on the entire bottom of my tank as of my tank move 2 months ago. so far so good. it is VERY stable.

its kind of a pain but worth it in the end if it prevents killing fish you should see the piece I cut for my sump (as a grow out shelf) I angled my baffles when I built it let me see if I can dig up a decent picture

Egg crate is definitely the way. I wish I put it down before I had my tank up and running. Instead my engineer goby started digging like a crack addict and caused my rock to shift. I then put the egg crate down and it appears to be all good. Awesome stuff, highly recommend.
