Eventually the pair will establish a territory and attempt to drive away competitors. Unless you have a very large tank that equals death to the third.

I agree. The third eventually would be killed by the more dominant pair.

what if i just got one. is that ok and would it matter if they are the same ---
and bought at differant times/

Clown fish are sexless. When 1 becomes dominant it becomes female and grows larger than the others. The mate becomes the male.
Clowns cannot revert back once they have changed into the dominant female, so always be sure when introducing a new Clown to get a smaller one.
