questions about a 10 gallon nano

I am thinking of buying a buddy for his BD a 10 gallon nano
I do not know anything about nano's
I know he does not want a reef tank, so it will be a fish only tank
So I was going to buy one with 50/50 PC lighting
- has an overflow
- 10 lbs live sand
- 10 lbs live rock
so how do water changes work? how much needs to be done?
will he need a skimmer?

A power head and heater would be good also. He could get by without a skimmer. Of course, he'd still have to cycle the tank, and I'd do weekly 10% waterchanges with RO water.

Keep in mind he wont be able to keep alot of fish in this tank.
also you will need a small heater.

2 fish is optimal ... 3 fish is MAX/risky

does the skimmer fit in the back of the tank or is a sump required?
I am trying to make it as easy as possible for him

There are different types HOB (hang on back), and standing ones used in sumps. You could get a HOB.
