Questions for anyone with a fluval and reef

I received some advice recently that my fluval would not be ideal for a reef tank. I am planning on starting one and would hate to have to buy another filter. Is it possible to use a fluval filter on a reef tank if it is cleaned reguarly? If so how should I set the fluval up?
My tank:

36 gallon
Fluval 204

Not ideal, but certainly can be used. Buy an extra set of foam filters for it, clean it at least twice a month. Change out the dirty ones for the clean ones, and rotate them. I would just put the bio max rings in the holding cups. I ran a 304 fluval on my 46 gallon tank for years with no problems. Just remember to clean it regularly. I think they are wonderful filters, and certainly easy to clean.

When we got our tank (it's used) it had a sump and it broke during the move, so we went to the lfs and they sold us a Fluval. But they were out of the filter media. So we went to another lfs, and that guy told us that it wasn't ideal for a reef tank either, but that it would work ok as long as we had a protein skimmer, and some good water movement. Which we had already. Hope this helps.
