Questions re QT tank occupancy.

First a quick summary of my plans, then the questions. None of my plans are set in stone if they aren't feasible. I am still weeks away from implementing them.
I am nearly finished cycling my 46g main tank, and have been cyclying a 10g Qt tank for a couple of weeks. Once the main tank is cycled I plan on taking ~5g of it's water and adding it to the QT in hopes of speeding up/finishing the QT's cycle. The qt tank currently has a Whisper junior filter (unsure of gph), a 170gph powerhead with a sponge, and a heater of course.
I plan on getting green chromis as my first fish. All of the books I have recomend having 6+ chromis, but I plan on getting only 4 to begin with. Finally the question: Will 4 chromis survive in a recently cycled 10g for 2-3weeks before being added to the 46?
I will change the QT's water as needed to keep the water quality as good as possible. I have 2 flower pot halves and a long plastic vine for fish hiding spaces.
A second question: Is there a consensus on adding preventitive medication to the QT tank? I know this will involve removing the charcoal which seems like it would worsen my water quality.

Adding water from the main tank with the intention of speeding up the cycle wont do much.Very little bacteria actually lives in the water. You would be better off adding some substrate,or some filter media as this is where most of the bacteria lives. Also,If you are planning on medicating this Q tank, then you are pretty much wasting your time trying to cycle it.Most medications, especially antibiotics, reak havvok on the bio system......The chromis will be fine in the tank. They can,and usually survive a full blown cycle,so a recantly cycled tank should be NO PROBLEM.
