Questoins Regarding Durso Standpipe??

Today I did a test run with fresh water on my new 175 BF RR. I wanted to test the sump, skimmer and all plumbing to check for leaks.
I found out that the two built-in overflows and the standpipes that come with the system sound like a huge waterfall and toilet flushing. There's no way I will be getting any sleep with all the noise.
I read about Durso Standpipe and built a couple tonight. I will be testing them in the next few days. Here is the link for the information on how to build your own Durso Standpipe.

By the way, The cost was a whopping $13 for both overflows with about 20 minutes labor.
Questions
1)Have any of you tested or used the Durso Standpipe? What were your thoughts?
2)I used PVC cement to glue the pieces of PVC together. Will that be toxic to my tank???
Thank you

Never used them on my rr because it is in a wall so the noise is minimal. The pvc glue wont be toxic just let it dry for a little while.

Ive been setting up my new Oceanic 72 RR bowfront the last couple of days with freshwater as well. The first day I started it with just the sump and man the overflow was LOUD! My wife reminded me of the "quite overflows" I had told her I seen online awhile back. Anyway I built mine exactly as stated on Dursos webpage and IT IS QUITE! The water level sits right in the middle of the street ell as he suggested and all I did was drill a hole big enough for an airline so I could add an air valve to adjust flow. It turned out the air flow through the airline was perfect, no valve needed. Im very pleased with it and would suggest it to anyone with loud overflow problems.

BTW, I dont think gluing is needed because if it leaks at all, it is in the overflow. Plus if you need to trim down any length on anything it will slip back apart. Also, Im not sure how much "stuff" will grow in them but it might help for cleaning purposes later on if they are not glued. Thats just my thought on it.

Thanks Mini-Reefer. I tested the Durso tonight. WoW!! What a difference. I am sure glad I am taking my time on my first tank and not rushing. I am learning quite a bit as I go along. I have tested all plumbing and no leaks. All is working fine. I think I will run the tank with the freash water in it for a day and then drain the tank. After that saltwater goes in.
