How many have a QT setup all the time, or on an as-needed basis?
Also, I've got a handful of bio-balls in my sump, I was planning on putting those into an old wisper HOB filter, and leave the filter cartridge out... would this work for a qt?

Not sure I understand this. QT to me is qurentine (not sure I spelled it right either:eek: )
1. Not enough room
2. It can not be hooked up to the display.
3. To much water flow
QT is to make sure that the fish (or what ever) is healthy before it goes in the display. That way your display can be free of lets say "ick".
A fish in a HOB filter will be attached to the display. The display will be infected. Ich will travel to where ever it can as long as the water is moving between them.
If I don't understand your ? tell me.

Sorry i didn't explain very well... the HOB will go on a 10 gallon which I am going to use as my QT... i wasn't planning on putting a fish in there  :D
A QT is a Quaruntine (sp) Tank, you put new critters in there to prevent contaminating your display tank (DT).

OK I understand.
I setup as needed. I use tank water as needed. You really could do both or none for your BB question. I don't use any. Just water changes w/ tank water. Throw away the water from the QT, add water from display and add NSW to display.
What's a QT?
Uhhh... I just explained it if you were reading the thread.

I keep a 20 gal QT running all the time...just in case. I do have a 8'X12' fishroom behind an in-wall 180 so space is not a constraint.
My QT is a very simple setup with just 2 sponge filters running and I do keep a few hermits & snails in there which I remove if going to medicate or hypo.
