Quick Question: How to filter sand?

I have a 100 gal and its got all sorts of crap in the sand now due to initial problems with the water (which is almost sorted). I plan on getting a cleanup crew for keeping the sand clean, but is there any mechanical way to filter all the crap out of the sand now?
Or should I move the fish to a different tank and just dredge everything?

no mechanical way, but nassuris snails are good for cleaning the sand bed, so are brittle starfish, mabey sandsifting crabs
