i just bought a penguin 550 power head but i dont know if it is submerssible. the cord to plug it up is on the top of it so does that much need to stay out of the water or can i put the whole thing in the tank without electrocuting my fish or myself when i change the water? can anyone help.

I've never used that powerhead before.
If it does not clearly say on the box or instructions that it is rated for fully submersible applications - I would call the manufacturer.
Most powerheads are fully immersible.
Heaters are a different story.
I would also suggest unplugging them before you reach you hand into your tank - although I would imagine the majority of us do not.

I have 2 Penguin 550's in my tank and the answer to your question is..Yes, they are fully submersible. I have one about 5 inches from the bottom angled at 55 degrees. They are sealed well and the manufacturer (Marineland) confirmed to me that they are fine underwater.
Hope it helps ;)
