not sure i understand your question but... My tank and stand are on carpet so all our stuff is in the sump. just a preference I think you can get bigger ie. more flow from external pumps but I did'nt even look into those for my use. Plumbed in unions so as to pull and clean easily.

in line is the same as external sorry should have worded it diff I also heard the the in sump pump could also heat the water in your tank wondering if anyone encountered this problem or even heard of it..

I was going to go with an ext. rather then an in sump because of heat, ease of access, adding more space in my sump,and most ext are more powerfull and made better I think but just couldn't fit one in my stand w/ my sump w/o running pvc off the sump to the pump and then up.Ideally I wanted the pump attached to the sump and then up with pvc.
It's up to you how you go either way works lol
