There is a lot of difference.
Pacific rocks tend to be more porous than Caribbean, for instance.
What type of rock are you looking at?

I'm by no means an expert, but as I understand it, it's best to avoid silica based rocks. They release silica which helps promote brown algae. Use argonite or coral. They release calcium (which is needed) and are a natural buffer.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Look at the PICs of LR that this site sells. That is what you want your rock to look like.

You need to use rock specifically for marine aquariums, if that is what you are asking.
