quick sexy shrimp question

Do you have to have an anenome(?) for a sexy shrimp or are they fine without one, the LFS told me that they will die without one- if they dont get eaten but other tank members first. Is this true because I would really like to get one or 2 and another cleaner shrimp

As long as your fish are shrimp friendly, I don't think you'll have a problem. I don't think an anemone is a must.

Tell us some more about your tank.
They do not need an anemone to live but often perish with out one due to other reasons which are often avoidable. I had 4 sexies and just lost 2. Not sure what happened to them but the remaining pair have been in my tank for 4 months (since initial set-up). Mine hang out in and around the LPS corals for the most part. Be sure you do not have any intakes that would suck them up and to feed something like frozen cyclopeeze frequently for them. Many fish will go after them and cause harm thinking they are a good food source. I think they should also be the only shrimp species in the tank.

I started with 4 and lost 2 quickly. I have had the other two for over a month. They love the bubble coral and frogspawn. My fish seem to ignore them. Oh and i don't have an anemone.

I've read that the shrimp actually pick at the anemone (not harming it), so it could be that they obtain important nutrition from this activity. I'm sure a sexy shrimp could survive without an anemone (provided you don't have predators in the tank), but they would probably live longer and come out in plain view a lot more with the addition of one.

They may not fair well with the clown. What type is it? They do need a place to feel safe and from what I have read if not an anemone then they will take to frogspawn and the like. Mine wander about the tank quite a bit but always retreat under the FS branches to rest. I feed the tank frozen cyclopeeze every one to two days. (I also have an anemone crab in this tank and set it up with housing these species in mind so they have peaceful tank mates. I have had the anmeone crab for maybe 6 months w/out an anemone and it has been thriving from what I can tell. He lives in a particular zoanthid colony.) Hope that helps. ***)
