prime only makes it safe for fish. Happens instant, but it only nutralizes it, does not remove it. You will always have algea problems using it. Get you and RO/DI unit it is so easy to install in wash room, and can get a nice one under $200.
So yes you can use it but you will always be fighting the water issues

I used Prime and Amquel before finally going to use the water from those Glacier machines at the grocery stores. The Prime and Amquel removed the chlorine instantly. I bought test strips to check on how fast it was removed since I was never one to make up water and aerate it for a day. I never had a major hair algae problems with my tank. I would just have to reach in and pull out clumps of it every once in awhile but the critters took care of most of it. But, I never had coralline algae growing either with the tap water. Now, after 21 years, I have it growing on the hermit crab shells! They look so pretty now!

just buy Distilled at walmart or something..6gal is like $3.50 if you dont want to buy an RO unit.
You have to be careful with distilled. More often then not it is distilled with copper pipes. I usually buy a couple of nursery distilled water jugs in case I need a quick add.
