Quick Zoa Question

Do zoas close then they eat? I have fed some of my zoas mysis before and I see them close then. I just fed some coral frenzy and none of them closed up but they kinda puffed up a bit. Do they only close to eat large things?

I would guess that they were not impressed with the coral frenzy or hungry. It is a dry that you soak right? I have not tryed it myself yet so really don't know. I have tried a freeze-dry type mix before and rehydrated it and the zoas did not respond to it. Now I feed only finely chopped frozen/thawed and all my zoas go after it like mad.
But to answer your question about them closing to feed or not, yes, they will close in order to trap the food with their tenticles and take it into the mouth part. If they do not close but puff up instead, they are probably irritated by the food stuffs touching them.
Maybe try getting frozen silversides, mysis, brine shrimp, squid, krill and put a small chunk of each into a food chopper and chop it till it is really tiny. I do it while still frozen for best chopping effect. Then add some tank water to it in a cup and allow it to get to tank temp and target feed with a syringe or baster.
Guarantee your zoas will not be able to resist it.

thanks for all the info. I have tried the mysis before and only my organisms have taken it. My acans and ricordea took the coral frenzy though. And yes its like a fine powder that you mix with water.

I would like to add though that they can still be feeding and not closed. If there is enough food on them they can easily take it into the mouth without using the tenticles to capture it. You should be able to see if the mouth is open and if the food is large enough you can see it in there. If the mouth is shut tight then it is probably not interested in feeding. I may have left the impression that the tenticles have to be closed over the food.
Most all of the larger palythoas will close over the food though at least from wehat I have seen, but I am no expert.
Oh, and not all of the zoas in a colony need to eat. They share nutrients though their stolonic basal connections.
