Hey Dirk... take a look at the thread I started below re: You Don't Have To Use Damsels To Cycle A Tank!
Seems like the jumbo shrimp has been a good option for a lot of people.

The quickest way is to use all the substrate, live rock, filter media, water,EVERTHING from a well established aquarium. Even doing this will not garentee you won't have a cycle.Nothing GOOD comes quickly in this hobby.Only disasters come quickly........
Use rocks and substrates that are from established tanks. Other than that, don't use fishes. Get something that will create a lot of ammonia. For example, a BIG chuck of raw shrimp.
How much raw shrimp would u suggest for a 55g?Also i have some live rock but the problem is it is coming from a tank which had a disease wipe everything out, would this cause a problem if i put live rock from that tank into my tank for cycle?
Dirk,
Man I would hesitate on adding anything to my tank that came from a diseased tank !!!
Too much at risk .. even if the LR from the disaster tank was free I would not do it.
There really is no sure fire way to cycle a tank fast ... each one is different and each person does it the way they see fit.
I've cycled one tank with damsels
I've cycled one tank with LR
Both worked equally well
Good luck and DON'T ADD THE NASTY DISEASE RIDDEN ROCK !!!!
