Quickie computer question....

Never noticed till now, that I'm trying to trick my 360 into playing .mp4's, but either way, on my computer, when I click rename, I don't get the full file extension, just the actual name. So for example if the file is carvid.avi, when I click rename I only getcarvid and if I tried to change it, to carvid.wmv, the computer thinks the file name is carvid.wmv.avi
This is the first time I've notice this on any computer I've ever used. Comp is running XP, SP3, all the updates. I tried for hours now all the different view options, and googling for an answer, but haven't found anything close.

These instructions apply to XP only. Vista and later are similar but not exactly the same.
Open a file browse folder. IMO the easiest way is to open My Computer and double click your hard drive (C). You need not browse to the folder in question, this change applies to all folder views.
Click "Tools" in the menu bar, and select "Folder Options"
Click the "View" tab
Scroll through the "Advanced Settings List" and uncheck "Hide Extensions for Known File Types" and click OK.
Bingo bango.
