The infamous southdown sand is not available anywhere in Central Florida so I've been using quikcrete play sand from Home Depot with great success. I was wondering if anybody else has tried this sand and is having any luck. My golden headed sleeper goby seems to love it. AT only $2.50 for a 50lb bag I love it to.

How long ago did you add this sand? Any algae blooms or anything?
I might try it too, if no one has any disagreements. Can't get HD playsand in wisconsin.

My main concern is if this stuff is actual REEF SAND. Probably not. HD playsand actually comes from the same reef that caribsand mines thiers from. It is real REEF sand. Also how fine is it?? If the sand is too fine it will pack down and become a layer of concreate in your tank.Funny, this stuff is made by a major concreate manufacturer.Personally,I would not have used it,and would not reccomend it.Hope it works out ok.But if you see it packing down don't wait.GET IT OUT. Email me for the phone# to get HD sand delivered to your door.(factory direct)

Mr. Salty,
Can you e-mail me the info please. It wouldn't let me send you a personal message. I checked your profile and it didn't show your e-mail. I have a 75 gallon on a lay-away plan and want to do a DSB. I am wanting some info on the HD sand and would also like to know some about your Red General Starfish, he looks awsome. Thanks for any help. b_ball12_99@hotmail.com

The quikrete play sand has granuals of all sizes from very fine to pebble size. No alagea blooms at all. I am using it in a FOWLR. The golden headed sleeper sifts away all day and digs his trenchs. NO concrete down there. It seems to be the perfect mixture of different size grains. PH is perfect. Silicates do not come from sand but from the water you use or so I've been told. The glass in my tank is made from the same quartz sand. I guesss somebody out there needs to line the pockets of caribsea and the LFS...not me.

SeaPig,
What is the exact wording on the bag? I'm heading to HD today and I'm gonna buy a bag, don't wanna get a "slightly different/horrible mistake" type of sand!
O3, are you sure you have the exact same brand and type of sand SeaPig's talking about? I just wanna be sure....thanks!
What a great thread this is!
