I was wondering if paying $175 for a Rainbow monti is worth buying. It is 3.5 inches tall, and 3.5 inches wide. Let me know because he might be deciding to frag it. Thanks

What do you mean it is not the "original"?? Is there a difference?? Such as in price? So you do believe its a good price? The price is without shipping..

There's the orignal rainbow monti which is the Tyree LE coral. The rainbows that are not of this strain often do not keep their blue base color or the multicolored polyps. Whether or not the originals of any rare coral are worth the money is a controversial topic, but the Tyree rainbow goes for up to $80 for 1/2".

So you are saying that the color of the coral will start to change into a uglier color as it ages or what? I don't want to spend that much money for it to change its color and become brown...Anyone can chime in at any time too

I'm not saying it will for sure, but it often does.

then maybe i'll not get it, I really don't want to risk it turning a color that is not what I paid for. Thanks for your help. Also, he said that he has had it for a few years and covered most of the base rock. Could this be a sign that it will stay the same color forever or still has a chance of a color change??

With maricultured corals like the rainbow you're looking at yes that's a good sign, but it can always still change colors per your own water quality and lighting.

I agree with Viper, there is so much hype on the price/size of a particular coral...There are a couple of sites that sell maricultured corals which are billed as "this or that" the colors are not as intense and they typically do not look like the "originals" I've learned my lesson in this area, it's better to go for quality vs size IMO.....
Now, if the coral your talking about is one of those screaming deals you stumble across everyonce in while and the colors are true to what a good quality Rainbow should look like, then it's an incredible deal. If it's just a monti that has colors that are close to a rainbow, then it's totally based on what YOU think it's worth. IMO most of the rainbows that are that size don't look that great after a period of time, the frags look awesome, but once the new growth has been around for a while they tend to lose their coloring.

looks more like a pokerstar monti or something to that effect a rainbow is more blue with green polys and redish orange around the leading growth edge...
anyways a price is all on what u feel is reasonable...
i know i get aqua cultured pieces just like that from the wholesalers for $50 but thats wholesaler price which is what the LFS pays...
heres some i picked up a while ago

mine have grown well but are not as vividly colored as before which is one issue with the aquacultured ones they need tons of MH lighting to keep them that color and i only run 14K 250's Phoenix

It's a maricultured piece probably from Tonga or maybe Bali. Not the Tyree LE.
