or a small snowflake eel about 6 inches tha you buy and turns to a fish killing monster at 12inches and it kills over 150 dollars of fish now that sucks

I saw 8 blue hippo's at my LFS 2 months ago. They were that same size. I was there today and only one was left. It was about 2" big. I wonder where the rest are. I also saw a seehorse in a nano with a hold sign on it. They also had quite the cyano outbreak. gross!

Many years ago, when I worked as a fish collecter in the keys, before being in the keys was fashionable and cool ( left to us "crackers"), When I caught fish of that size, my boss would chastise me for bringing him "eyeballs". To this day, I still believe that there is a "slot length or minimum size" that determines a fishes survivability rate. Too small, not enough adequate food, too large, not able to adjust. Any other thoughts from anybody?

The point is that many people see this beautiful and small fish and automatically think they are okay for their own tank because they are "small" fish. At the LFS, they don't take into consideration how huge they get. Many people on here do the same with batfish. They always see the batfish small and think that that is a good fish for their 55 gallon tank.

Hmmmmm...I'm thinkin' the point is research and gain knowledge about additions PRIOR to makin' a purchase.

So you are saying it's the LFS's fault people are too stupid to research what they are buying? I don't assume a Great Dane puppy will stay that size. I think there is no real point to this thread.

Right, sorry NM, that was kinda what I was getting to. People see these beautiful and small fish, and because most people do not do their research FIRST, they buy the fish for their tanks and research once having the fish bought.

actually the point ot this thread is for people to read it and say...WOW , maybe i should not impulse buy and do some research on living animals before i put them in an unsuitable environment.
and since some people had a problem with the thread it makes me think "whats in their tanks that they felt so inclined to say its a pointless thread" ????? :notsure:

surfinusa yeah, what is your point
i know you CANNOT be serious trying to jump on the "whats your point" bandwagon from recent months post from you
My Way So you are saying it's the LFS's fault people are too stupid to research what they are buying? I don't assume a Great Dane puppy will stay that size. I think there is no real point to this thread.
YES i am saying its partially the LFS fault for not asking questions such as
what size tank do you have?
do you know how big these fish get?
do you know the potential problems with these fish and how to correct them if they happen?
im actually pretty sick of LFS's just trying to make a buck off of people, if they actually cared about animals and their well bieng they wouldnt let people come in their store and put a panther grouper in a 55 gallon tank or a shark in a 125 etc. Further more selling species that grow a few FEET in length, just cause their juvi's or hatchling's at the present time!
If you want to use the dog example then Yes you dont assume a great dane puppy will stay that size because EVERYONE has heard how big a great dane will get, but what if you never heard of the breed? i have a neapolitan mastiff that i bought as a puppy at 26 pounds,, he is only a year and a half old and weighs 195 already, alot of people wouldnt know that unless they were informed of the breed now would they? YET when buying a dog EVERYONE knows how big they will get so why is it different with fish?
Thats my point.

Ya, there is a particular LFS around here that often gets fairly large shipments of Regal Tangs, baby ones. About the size of a quarter. They so cool to watch, especially when there is alot of them. But I can imagine the thoughts that go through some peoples heads.......I would be willing to bet atleast a few people have taken one home to their 20 or 30 gallon tank lol.

Sorry but this is one time I don't see it being the LFS's fault, unless you tell them you don't know what you are doing, it's the buyers responsibillity to do the research. For some reason people don't think of fish as pets, rather they think of them as disposable. Case in point. My sister just asked me to move my nieces tank so she could have new carpeting put down while she was away as a suprise for her, when I told her i needed time to get this together, her attitude was "Well I'll just replace what does'nt make it and do it myself if you can't help. That was until I told here LR is $7.00 a pound and that there was about 100 lbs. of it, not to mention if you lose the baccteria in the filter it could take up to 6 weeks to get it going again. Back to the dog thing, the average person who is looking for a puppy will ask about breeds they are not familiar with such as temperment size etc. but they don't care about fish. Besides this how many times have you been in a LFS and heard an employee tell the buyer that a certain fish is to aggresive for their setup or that their tank is to small only to have the buyer disregard the information given? It happens a lot, if you don't believe me just look at how many threads on this board people ask if they can house a fish in their setup only to be told don't do it and then they do it anyway.
