Rare shark killed and eaten

The World Wildlife Fund said Tuesday that a rare megamouth shark, seen above on March 30, was accidentally caught and later eaten in the Philippines. A spokesman for the group said the 1,100-pound creature, which died while struggling in the fishermen's net, was butchered in nearby Donsol. There are only 40 other recorded encounters with the creatures.
The 1,100-pound 13-foot megamouth died while struggling in the fishermen's net on March 30 off Burias island in the central Philippines. It was taken to nearby Donsol in Sorsogon province, where it was butchered and eaten, said Gregg Yan, spokesman for WWF-Philippines.
Yan said a WWF Donsol Project Manager Elson Aca took pictures of the megamouth and tried to dissuade the fishermen from eating it. Shark meat is the main ingredient in a local delicacy.
The first megamouth was discovered in Hawaii in 1976, prompting scientists to create an entirely new family and genus of sharks. The megamouths are docile filter-feeders with wide, blubbery mouths. Yan said the Burias megamouth's stomach revealed it was feeding on shrimp larvae.

Sounds like it didn't have a chance at being let go to swim another day. The only thing lost was the body which would have probably gone to research. Hey at least the meat didn't go to waste like it does when finning takes place.

I get that same, "better then to go to waste" vibe too, though I think WWF's pointed was that they tried to get the shark into the hands of researchers first?

I thought some sharks were not edible due to the lack of urinary tracks. Yes it would of been nice for the researchers to get their hands on it. I would of like to of seen it. Maybe I had some before at the scuba shack in subic.

Actually I think the only shark that you have to be careful about eating is the The Greenland shark which is poisonous when fresh. This is due to the presence of the toxin trimethylamine oxide, which, upon digestion, breaks down into trimethylamine, However, it can be eaten if it is boiled in several changes of water or dried or rotted for some months . It is considered a delicacy in Iceland and Greenland.

Thats good to know. Don't plan on eating any sharks. I guess I was misinformed. Too many people killing sharks just because. I snorkeled with reef sharks in the Bahamas. For the most part they are just curious until the diner bell rings then all hell breaks loose.

In all seriousness did anyone doubt this would have happened? Third world countries don't care about anything except their next meal.

Not edible is not a vocabulary word in some third world countries...

Thats because that is all they have to worry about. This world was perfect 1000 years ago when people stayed where they belong. We as people were seperated and lived in our own areas for a reason.
You look at those tribes in South America and the last few African Tribes. They have zero negative effect on this world. None. People are screwing this place up.

Are you saying that the tribal peoples live better lives than us high tech societies? I would rather live in a society where I have my needs taken care of instead of one where I am starving eating dirt pies.

The only reason you have to worry about eating dirt pies is because of the tecnology. Why can't we just be happy with what we were given with?
Sad to see a cool creature 'wasted'.

No. That is obvious that they do not. I simply said that those tribes have zero negative effect on the world. How you got they live better is beyond me.
My point was that people are the death of our world. And personally I can't stand standing in line at the grocery store buying my food. I'd much rather grow it and kill it myself. But certains laws frown upon that.
