Sounds pretty good to me. Just be sure that you have good water movement going throughout your tank---bottom, middle and top. What you essentially have here is the natural system of filtration with minimal dependency on "equipment". This type system relies on good water movement throughout the tank to maintain optimum efficiency.

I've got plenty of water movement in the tank. Enough that the top of the water has adequate oxygen exchange and that the bottom of the tank has no dead spots. So far so good, but my nitrates are a bit high.

OK sharks, we have a person that tells you their filtration, not including the type of water they use, have no idea of how long this tank has been set up (no info in the profile), have no idea how long they have been in the hobby, and Beth gives it the BIG OK. 3 to 4 inches of live sand - what kind of sand? Powerheads, how many gph? I have 3 power heads too, could be 50gph or 300gph, what do you think, enough?
I hate to be a downer, but as moderators, you need to think.
I have seen moderators ask many more questions before sayin "Sound pretty good to me".
I'm sorry, but you need more info than this to make a determination.
Please send hate-mail to steamboat1569@aol.com.

Yes, I was just responding to the question, not trying to analyze every aspect of the system. I did open the door for further discussion or issues to be brought up by mentioning the necessity of water movement—that would cover the gph. Beni is now mentioning that he might have a nitrate problem, so it is a good time for him to provide more details regarding his tank; specifically: type of live rock and live sand, particle size of live sand and how he has determined that there are no dead spots in his tank. Age of setup? Type of system: FO, FOWLR or reef? What janitorial organisms are you using if any? Spill your guts about your tank, Beni! :D
Steam, I understand where you are coming from but it’s really a judgment call for the mods to decide whether to make all those initial queries up front. Sometimes it’s a turn off when folks just want you to answer short and sweet. For instance, last nite I was also answering posts in the disease section where one member who posted a thread said right off he didn’t want any advise or comments about QTing fish, etc….! LOL He didn’t want advise about QTing fish but he’s in the Disease Forum looking for advise….!
Sometimes us poor Sharks give too much advise, and sometimes not enough. So, what’s a mod to do?? <img src="graemlins//confused.gif" border="0" alt="[confused]" />

I'll try to answer all of the questions mentioned.
-I use RO/DI water.
-The tank has been set up in it's current location for 2 months. Prior to that 1 year in the last apartment.
-I have been in the hobby for 1.5 years.
-The live sand is mainly HD play sand, but 10% consists of LFS live sand.
-500 gph powerhead movement.
-Nitrates are at 40.
-No fish deaths.
-Determined no dead spots at bottom by rearranging powerheads until no diatoms or algae spots on sand.
-Due to the aggressive nature of my fish selection, the tank is a FOWLR/LS.
-Again, due to the nature of the beasts, no clean up crew. There is one lone scarlet hermit that somehow hitched a ride and has learned to only come out and clean once the lights go out. Maybe I'll invest in some more and introduce them during lights out.
Thanks for all the input, and I'm honored that my post has drawn the attention of such respected members as yourselves.

Well, with an aggressive setup, you may well have problems maintaining an adequate "natural" filtration system. A DSB can not fulfil its function very well [or at all really] unless it has adequate infauna.
I'd suggest that you visit the Agressive Forum, if you haven't already, and get some suggestions on what detritivores you can add to your tank that your fish won't eat. If you do not get turnover in the DSB, then it will clog up and become very problematic.

Hate to say it, but a lot more info. really does set the whole story straight. Thanks, Benihuma for posting your stats. I really would not have tried to answer without it. Don't want to give bad advice based on insufficient information.
I noticed that Beth did the pervervial turnaround after learning of your set up.
jwtrojan44, an oppinion is a personal determination of a situation.
And yes, all these things have everything to do with Benihuma's situation.
