Re-Staining Stand & Canopy

I'm purchasing someone's knotty alder stand and canopy. I dont' really like the oak finish and was considering re-staining the canopy and stand. How much work is this? I'd really like to go black. Is this even worth the trouble? Is it a ton of work?

It is quite a bit of work and patience, yes. Unless you really, really don't like it then it might not be worth it. I don't even like to entertain the idea of re-finishing something as simple as a shelf let alone an entire cabinet and canopy lol.

Re-finishing a stained piece of furniture is a PIA, yes. But if you just want to go black (as in paint I assume?) then it's not QUITE so difficult - you don't need to sand out the stain, just strip the poly from the surface and paint over the stain....then re-poly.
