went to a lfs for the first time today, just to buy water. I wanted premixed, so i could do a water change a little sooner. well, the lady took my 5 gal contanier, and started to fill it from one of thier tanks :scared: :scared:
I told her to stop, that i wanted fresh r/o premixed, and she said what, this is how we sell it. I told her i didnt want her tank water to bring home ick and what ever else to my tank. and she seemd offended. :notsure: :notsure:

Gosh! :scared: $1.50 for tank water. Here you can get it for about .50 a gallon.

Gross!! It's a good thing you didn't "just go along with it".
I'd be more worried about the copper they probably put in that water to keep the ich at bay than I would be about the ich itself!

If anyone in the St. Louis area is interested, I'll be selling water from my tank for the low, low price of $1.50 a gallon.

Guess what that should have told you??????? :notsure: Don't give that store your business anymore, because apparently when you started buying water from them they told you it was fresh so they apparently lied to you, and secondly that you should invest in an RO/DI unit. It will pay for itself in the long run.....There are certain things you shouldn't skimp on and skimmer and RO unit rank up there IMO

acrlic, that was the first time ever in that store. It was close to where i was at the time.

Will be getting r/o unit when new house built. dont have place in old house, and dont want to put it under kitchen sink.

RO units don't start paying for themselves on the smaller tanks. I did the research, and for my needs it's cheaper to buy Wal-Mart RO water than to get my own filter.

I figured out that if I buy r/o freshwater from my LFS then mix it with salt to make my own saltwater, I'd save $.20 a gallon, sounds like a good deal for me. Especially because I can then use Reef Crystal salt, which would be better for my reef tank then just regular salt crystals. You guys think this sounds good?

For the last two years I've just been buying there salt water that they mix for $1.00 a gallon and their fresh is $.50 a gallon, so I don't really know how to mix my own salt, but I know an extra powerhead and heater are very helpful right?

you can find a cheeper way to mix your own i mix my own a loacal pet shop here sells a 50 gallon mix of sea salt for 12 bucks and i buy my ro units threw petsmart.com i can buy the refillable canister for about 17 bucks after you buy the full unit. so if i did the math one ro unit before i have to change the canister lasts about three months for me making about 15 gallons of watter a week and for the salt i do a 10 gallon change on my trigger tank twice a month and same on my reef tank
so i spend on salt less than 12 dollors a month and my ro unit about 6 dollors a month so i would say 15- 20 dollors a month i spend doing it myself

Online they have reef crystals that has extra calcium, extra trace elements, extra vitamins and 50 gallons is 13.49 and the freshwater is only $.50 a gallon at my LFS. I don't know if it would be worth my while to buy a R/O unit, i have one now on my filtered water at my house, but the tank is small and it runs out fast. From what I've heard reef crystals eliminates the need for special addictives if you do weekly small water changes.

So are the reef crystals better than salt like instant ocean? :notsure: If so I'll start buying them instead since there actually cheaper and better.

Well, its made by the same people, so Reef Crystals is instant ocean for reef tanks, instead of adding daily addictives, it adds them for you, but ONLY if you do weekly changes, if you only do monthly changes, I think you still have to add some addictives, but weekly changes replenish the essential reef elements.

I keep two 40 gallon trash cans of RO water, one fresh.. one mixed with salt  although.. they are both empty.. and I need a new membrane on ro unit.. TDS Reading is low 30's
EDIT: might as well mention tap water is at 130 or so.

:hilarious It's funny how a thread can change from going to a bad fish store, to a thread about r/o and salt :notsure:
