If the red algae looks slimy then there is a product out there that I would recommend. It is made by UltraLife Reef Products and is Called RED SLIME remover.. This stuff is great. Had the same problem with the slime coming back. My lfs suggested this to me and i tried it. It worked great. 48 hours after I added it to my tank the red stuff was gone completely. I vaccumed all the residue left behind out and my tank looks like a new setup. I must tell say that I was very impressed. I don't like putting things unnatural in my tank but there was not other way. Clean up crew from here did not do it either. Just make sure u take out all your mechanical filtration: such as charcol, fibre matt, etc, and also turn off your skimmer. That will keep the slime remover from being filtered out. After the 48 hour period you will need to do a 15 to 20 percent waterchange along with vacumming the dead algae out. After that you can put your filtration back in and turn your skimmer on. The skimmer will go nuts for about 12 hours so keep a close eye on it so your don't end up with a mess. Hope this info helps you out.

Thanks for all your help,my lfs said its probably a water condition problem. They think it might be my RO system not working correctly.Reef master, I looked for what you suggested but they don`t carry it, they gave me something just as good but I have to get to the root of the cause first. I`ll keep you posted, thanks.

Fireman,
your welcome. The slime is caused by a bacteria in the water. Once it starts it is hard to get rid of with out the use of the remover. Phosphates is one source that can cause the bacteria to get going. Foods you feed your tank can also have traces of it. Silica's in your food can also cause the problem.
If I may ask what food have you been feeding? Another thing you can try is there are lots of phosphate reduces out there and not too expensive you can try using one of those solutions. If your LFS will test your phosphate lvl for you I would check it out. Would not invest in a tester cause they are quite expensive. It would be better to just invest in the reducers.
I had the same issue with my tank and finally tried the remover and my tank has been clean since. Nothing in the the tank suffered that I can tell. I also put a phosphate reducer in my tank to help reduce mine. I have not tested since. Good luck..

Another very good product that is reef safe is called chemi-clean, but if you do not find the root of your problem (probably high phosphates and nitrates caused from tap water and over feeding) then it will keep coming back.

I can vouch for the Chemi-clean. I had it before I started using DI water. It took the initial dosage plus one more 48 hours later and it has not been seen in the tank now for 3-4 months. It is quite expensive BUT it does what it says it will do.

Hey gang, got my water tested and the RO system is working great. Took a sample of my tank water to a marine biologist to get tested and everything is good.I was told to change about 7/8 of my substrate with new, clean all rock, and use Chemi Clean to get rid of all red algae. He said this should get rid of my problem and let some good algae grow. Wish me luck, later.
