I never toch the algae on the back so my snails/starfish always have something. What does the red look like? It is only on the back?

I also leave the back alone. The back of mine is black so if rally does not look that bad. I ahve also seen some tanks where they hae all kinds of stuff growning on the back wall. These tanks have been set up for a long time and it look really good. So I think that is the main goal.

I leave it on the back to serve as a foodsource for my snails. Plus I'd rather have it growing there than anywhere else.

Algae is usually caused when too much phosphates or silica is present. Phosphates are the green algae. Silica is the brown algae. You can remove some phosephates and silica with different tools. But when you clean the glass the algae usually dies and thus produces more phosphates and silica making your tank have even more of an algae problem. So now your back where you started but with a greater algae problem.
HTH Good Luck!
