Hi all, I'm thinking of getting a Red General Starfish. Exactly how would I feed this startfish. Diet is listed as meaty and should be fed often. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Jim

an easy way is to put something meaty, like uncooked shrimp or krill, on the sand and place the starfish on it.

More generally, I'm trying to find out which stars are "beginner safe"? Looks like the red general, plain ole' "red starfish", maybe orange linckia, and brittle stars are all ok in a medium size FOWLR tank (50 gal)?

red general would be fine, but they aren't reef safe. i'm not sure what a plain ol red star fish is. orange linkia is a definate no in that tank size. brittle stars are fine also.
no stars should be added before the tank is a good six months old. and keep that s.g. high and constant.

Thanks dudes. The "red starfish" is sold by SWF.com, here's their photo of it:

I like its appearance the best out of all of the various ones they sell. The description says it is peaceful, easy to care for, stays 2 inches or smaller, reef safe, and eats algae. Sounds ideal, unless anybody can say from personal experience that there might be a problem.
6 months huh? Shoot I guess I have another 5 or so to go.
